Kumba Iron Ore, through subsidiary Sishen Iron Ore Company Proprietary Limited, has signed a 20-year energy offtake agreement with Envusa Energy Proprietary Limited for an embedded solar photovoltaic plant rated at 72.5 megawatt-peak to deliver 63 megawatts alternating current to the Sishen mine in South Africa’s Northern Cape.

The plant will be built on or near the mine and is intended to feed electricity directly into operations once commissioned. Financial terms were not disclosed, and Kumba did not provide a commissioning date in the announcement.

The deal secures a long-duration supply of renewable power for one of Kumba’s largest assets, aiming to reduce exposure to grid instability and power price swings while lowering indirect (Scope 2) emissions. A dedicated on-site source should also improve operational resilience during periods of national power shortages.

Investors will watch for permitting milestones, the start of construction, and the commissioning schedule, as well as whether Kumba expands similar arrangements to other sites or adds storage to firm output. Delivery of the full 63 megawatts alternating current as planned, and evidence of reduced production disruptions at Sishen, will be key markers of impact.
