Harmony reports fatal seismic incident at Moab Khotsong; regulator probes operational impact

Harmony Gold reports an employee died in a seismicity-related fall-of-ground incident at its Moab Khotsong mine on 19 June 2026. The Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources is leading an investigation; the company is supporting the family and affected staff and has notified stakeholders.

Harmony Gold says one employee died on 19 June 2026 after a seismic event at its Moab Khotsong mine triggered a fall-of-ground. In plain terms, a small underground quake shook the rock mass, dislodging roof and sidewall material in the work area. This type of “seismicity-related fall-of-ground” is a known deep-level mining risk in South Africa’s goldfields, where intense rock pressure can release suddenly.

The Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources has opened an investigation, a process that can require affected sections to pause work while inspectors assess conditions and order safety measures. Harmony says it has informed all stakeholders, is supporting the worker’s family and colleagues, and will cooperate fully with the inquiry to determine the exact sequence of events and any remedial steps.
